I find this whole argument hilarious, because SSG has the same effect (granted-its not permanent and it's only red), but it has a similar effect in combo decks. It gets play in Legacy(Mono Red Prison at least), and then Vintage has real moxes and doesn't need it. Going through the scary fast decks: Dredge: I feel like SSG is always better, you just need to resolve a couple of spells every game and you only want red mana from what I can tell. This may not be fair actually. Most any deck that uses Simian Spirit Guide can probably use a Mox instead, especially if they have ways to use mana turn-after-turn. Once you've got that type of mana, I think its totally reasonable to be expect a combo kill on the spot split over XYZ cards. Affinity would most likely also play it. It could enable D&T to play Leonin Arbiters on turn-1, and use Ghost Quarter as a Wasteland on the following turn (unless opponent answers with their own Chrome Mox to pay arbiter).
